This lecture firstly examines land ownership in county Cavan before charting the impact of land reform between 1870 and 1930 on changing land ownership in the county. It concludes by examining the interactions of the Irish Land Commission with the Farnham estate and their agency there between 1924 and 1931.
What was life like for the people of Cavan in the early decades after independence? This talk examines living conditions, what assistance was available for the poor, the sick and the elderly at the time, whether from charities or from the state in the years after the end of the civil war until the onset of World War II in 1939. It will also look at how partition impacted on people’s lives.
Autumn Lecture Series - 2025 When the Irish Free State was created in 1922, the Local Authorities faced a number of challenges. This talk will discuss Cavan's Local Authority, Cavan County Council, as well as the rural district councils in the county and investigate how they acted and reacted to the volatile period in Ireland spanning the War of Independence and Civil War.
