Historian-In-Residence New Webisode Series

Cavan County Council's Historian-In-Residence, Dr. Brendan Scott returns on 7th September to deliver four online webisodes all centered on themes and events which occurred 100 years ago, as part of our Decade of Centenaries 2023 programme. Webisode are available online on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm.

Children's Book Review Competition - closing 26th August!

For the month of August we are inviting children to enter our 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻!! Call in to Bailieborough Library, Cootehill Library or Johnston Central Library to collect an entry form. Write a review and draw a picture of a scene from the book, return your entries by 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟲𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 to be placed in our draw to win a family size bar of chocolate!!

Amazing Chess Tournament at Cootehill Library

To celebrate 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 Cootehill Library hosted a 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 organised by chess master Tony McMahon. There was a fantastic turnout of 32 players! with some every intense matches! Congratulations to all the participants for attending but especially to the winners and runners-up!

Cavan Calling - Book Launch

There was a full house at the official launch of 'Faith, Hard Work and Endurance: selected tales from the Cavan Diaspora', by Jonathan Smyth (librarian Cavan Library Service). This fascinating book tells the story of the men and women who left these shores to seek new opportunities. Congratulations to Jonathan!

Cruinniú na nÓg is our national day of free creativity for children and young people under 18. Events are happening in libraries and other venues across Co. Enclosure Exhibition - well worth a visit!

'Enclosure' - an exhibition of assemblages and mixed media work by artist Celia Richard is currently on show at Cootehill Library. It is such a unique exhibition that will inspire people of all ages. Open during library opening hours until Friday 2nd June!

Bealtaine Festival events at Johnston Central Library

We had two fantastic events celebrating Bealtaine Festival in Johnston Central Library. During our Oral Reminiscences event, pupils from St. Felim’s attended and thoroughly enjoyed it all. For our Hidden Talents event, children from Coronea N.S. attended. Everyone put on a great display, the library was full of music which brought smiles to many faces.

Evening with author Gerard Smith

A fabulous evening was had by all with local author, Gerard Smith, who was guest speaker at the Cross-Border Reading Project - 'A Bridge Across Difference' event in the Johnston Central Library on Tuesday evening 18th April. A large attendance from Cavan, Leitrim, Fermanagh and Tyrone libraries enjoyed the event.

International Womens Day in Cootehill

Cootehill Library hosted a superb morning with amazing women to celebrate International Womens Day. There was a lot of energy in the room and fantastic ideas suggested on how we can make Cootehill better for all women. Thank you so much to all from Le Cheile and Cootehill Town Team and to every woman who came along today. Special shout out to Happy Feet Walkers who came along too!

World Book Day Story written by Primary Schools

To celebrate World Book Day pupils in 2nd - 4th class took part in Cootehill Library's ROUND ROBIN. They were given a simple story starter and tale took off like a rocket from there! Each class added a new installment until the exciting conclusion. Well done to all the pupils and teachers who took part - your shared story is brilliant!

Decade of Centenaries Spring Lecture Series

Cavan Library Service is delighted to present four lectures as part of their Spring Lecture Series. With varied and interesting topics the guest speakers are Professor Linda Connolly, Dermot McMonagle, Professor Terence Dooley and Dr David McCullagh. The lectures are in different venues and booking is advised as places will be limited.

Get Cavan Reading for Ireland Reads

Ireland Reads is a campaign to get the whole country reading this month in the lead up to a national day of reading on Saturday, February 25th. Cavan Libraries has teamed up with libraries nationwide, publishers, booksellers, authors and others for the campaign, which aims to celebrate reading and all the benefits it can have for wellbeing and enjoyment.
