Art of Life

Art-of-Life-Kim-TP

This project aims to normalise conversations around planning for end of life, death and dying using creative approaches for a soft engagement approach and will be delivered over 2024-2025.

Creativity can have a real impact, helping people to process and express emotion, maintain human connection and to make sense of their experiences.  This project will explore  a range of creative approaches, to facilitate these discussions.   Creative Cavan are partnering cross border engaging with Irish Hospice Foundation, Compassionate Communities, Cavan Age Friendly, South West Age Partnership, Healthy Ireland at your Library, Libraries NI and Cavan Library Service.

An art piece has been commissioned by Kim Gaffney Art to represent the project and was unveiled as part of the project on 3 October in Johnston Central Library by Cathaoirleach T.P. O'Reilly .  Following consultation with partners and a group of older people from Cavan Older Peoples Council and South West Age Partnership this image reflect the ethos of the project and the story behind the image can be found here.

Death Positive Libraries have been developed in a number of libraries in both Cavan County Council and Libraries NI (Fermanagh and Omagh area) allowing access to an approved reading list to support these topics.  The list of books can be found here:

The creatives will form a key part of delivery as they offer a different type of language, the language of metaphor – perhaps a non-verbal language, a visual vocabulary, which is ideal for engaging those hard to reach. They will be socially engaged artists who will engage in reflective practice and with great sensitivity.

A wide range of creative events have been arranged across the border areas of Counties Cavan, Fermanagh and Tyrone - available free of charge to those aged 55+.
