Save the date! We are hosting a two day "American Civil War" commemoration in August 2015 in Johnston Central Library...

We are delighted that so many “American Civil War” experts will join us in Johnston Central Library for our two day commemoration including:

  • The Cavan Singers will entertain us on Wednesday evening and we shall have a keynote talk by Dr Patrick Fitzgerald, The Mellon Centre for Migration Studies, Omagh.
  • Ian Kenneally, NUI Galway, will consider causes and issues of the Civil War.
  • Damian Shiels, archaeologist and author will focus on ‘The Irish in the American Civil War’.
  • Dr David Murphy, NUI Maynooth, will discuss famous battles such as Gettysburg and Fredericksburg.
  • Aidan O’Hara, historian and author will talk about acclaimed Civil War photographer Matthew Brady (reputed to be Cavan born).
  • Dr Brendan Scott will cover Cavan Individuals in the Civil War.
  • And Matthew Gilsenan (Celtic Tenors) and Dr Myles Dungan will deliver their ‘Fighting Irish’ programme on the Thursday evening in the Town Hall.
