Robert Vincent Walker

Robert Vincent Walker was born in 1880 in County Mayo. He was educated at Rockwell College, Co Tipperary and the Royal University of Ireland. He was a mathematical scholar with a particular interest in Irish place names. He did much of his work in this subject in counties Cavan and Monaghan and published the results of his research under the name “An Scolaire Bocht”. He was an accomplished rugby player and was capped as a forward for Munster and represented the Pembroke club at cricket. He was employed by the National Health Insurance Company Dublin as chief inspector and lived in Sandymount. He died on 31 March 1962. In the 1920s he wrote a series of historical articles on Cavan parishes where he listed town lands, gave the Irish version of the name and relevant historical facts.

Parishes listed are, Ballintemple, Castlerahan, Corlough, Crosserlough, Denn, Drumlumman (Mullahoran), Drumreilly, Glangevlin, Kildallon, Killan (Bailieborough–Shercock), Killinagh (Blacklion), Killinkere, Kinawley (Swanlinbar), Loughan or Castlekeeran (Mahghera), Lurgan (Virginia), Mullagh, Munterconnaught, Templeport, Tomregan (Ballyconnell), Virginia. These news cuttings have been collated in book form and are available in Local Studies section, Johnston Central library.
