Rannóg na Gaeilge
Seachtain Na Gaeilge 2017
Seachtain na Gaeilge is an annual event to celebrate the Irish language each March however the language is now an everyday integral part of the Cavan Library Service and is fite fuaite throughout all library events.
The library service deliver a programme of events for Seachtain na Gaeilge each year. We had nature as the theme in 2017 and were delighted to host Éanna Ní Lamhna, the well-known botanist and fluent Irish speaker. Her enthusiasm and absolute love of nature and wildlife is infectious and she enthralled all in attendance. Oral Irish workshops were held in Johnston Central, Cootehill, Belturbet and Arva Libraries as well as in St. Joseph’s Hall Ballyjamesduff. This was to afford leaving certificate students an opportunity to speak the language and pick up some of the valuable 40% marks now allocated to the spoken language for leaving certificate Irish examination. A detailed handout was prepared for each student. We had a very pleasant and enjoyable Maidin Caife where people used their cúpla focal and enjoyed the banter and discussion in an informal setting. Club Leabhar is an adult reading group held on the first Thursday of each month where various titles are discussed and authors are invited each year to meet the group. We were delighted to meet with Éilis Ní Dhuibhne author of Dordán, the book we are currently reading and she also discussed much of her work in particular Hurlumaboc which is currently part of the Irish language curriculum for Leaving certificate students. Nuala Hayes the eminent storyteller visited the Bailieboro and Cootehill libraries to meet school children from the surrounding areas. The Ciorcal Cómhra meet weekly in Johnston Central Library for adults who wish to speak the language and build on their vocabulary. Club na nÓg for national school children is ag dul ó neart go neart. Children have an opportunity to enjoy the language in a fun environment. This year bain siad triall as tráth na gceist and a ceilí for some of their meetings. We also offer a number of Gaeltacht scholarships to secondary schools pupils in Co. Cavan and a draw will be held in April. Rannóg na Gaeilge is part of the Cavan Library Website and has a detailed list of aids to help those learning the language see www.cavanlibrary.ie
