2026 Summer Reads are here!

The 22nd edition of our Summer Reading List is out now and the collection is available to borrow from all 9 of our library branches, the perfect starting point for anyone looking for a good book this summer. This year we’re introducing a short loan period to our Summer Reads - giving you a chance to get through more of the titles on the list!

Chris Haughton is new Laureate na nÓg

Cavan Library Service extends warm congratulations to Chris Haughton on his appointment as Ireland’s new Laureate na nÓg. We wish Chris every success as he takes on this role and look forward to seeing how his creativity and passion for stories will inspire a new generation of children to discover the joy of reading in Cavan and beyond!

Photography Exhibition

You’re Invited! Exhibition opening at Virginia Library on Thursday 14 May at 7.00pm. Join us for the official opening of Captured Moments, an exhibition by Breffni Photography Club, featuring a stunning collection of photographs capturing beautiful and meaningful moments. We’d love to see you there — come along, support local photographers, and enjoy a great evening of photography and conversation!

Bealtaine Begins!

1st May marks the start of Bealtaine Festival which is Ireland’s national celebration of creativity as we age. Cavan Library Service will host a rich mix of free events from 1 - 29 May and you can see the full programme listing in the Bealtaine Festival 2026 Brochure. Booking is essential for a number of events so we advise you give us a ring to secure your place!

Free Heart Health Checks with the Irish Heart Foundation

As part of Heart Failure Awareness Week 2026, Cavan Library Service is delighted to welcome the Irish Heart Foundation to Johnston Central Library on Tuesday, 5 May, from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm. This is a great opportunity to take a few minutes for your heart health — with free, confidential checks and expert advice available on the day. What’s on offer? ❤️ Mobile Health Unit (outside the Library) and Heart Failure Awareness Nurse (inside the Library)

1926 Census launch

Exciting News! The 1926 Census is being launched on the National Archives website on 18 April 2026. It was the first Census of the Irish Free State and will make very interesting reading for history and genealogy enthusiasts. If you need any assistance, please feel free to drop into your local Library.

Fact or Fiction?

'Fact or Fiction: What it means to be media smart and safe online', is a booklet created to showcase the range of titles that explore media literacy, misinformation, disinformation, and online safety—across both fiction and non‑fiction. This resource aims to deepen understanding of how media literacy shapes everyday life while offering a practical starting point for conversations about these important topics among adults, children, and teenagers.  Read the booklet online.

Easter Colouring Competition

Take part in our Spring Into Storytime Colouring Competition in all Cavan library branches. Lots of delicious Easter Egg prizes up for grabs! Download an entry form for 4-6 yr olds, 7-9 yr olds or 10-13yr olds or pop into your local library.

Winner of the February Challenge!

Congratulations to Indigo who won the overall prize in our February Challenge. She was one of only 10 people who managed to visit all 9 libraries in County Cavan last month! We'd like to offer a huge thank you to everyone who signed up to take part - we hope you enjoyed all that our libraries have to offer!

New Book Club Sets

Cavan Library Service is delighted to offer the opportunity to borrow from our new Book Club Collection - available to borrow from any library branch in Cavan. Launching on Ireland Reads, Saturday 28th February, this is a brilliant starting point for both new and existing book clubs!

Irish Cancer Society Roadshow

Your Health Matter Roadshow with the Irish Cancer Society. Cavan Library Service, through the Healthy Ireland at Your Library initiative, is delighted to welcome the Irish Cancer Society’s Your Health Matters Roadshow to Cavan for the first time. The Roadshow will take place in Johnston Central Library on Wednesday, 4th February, (World Cancer Day 2026) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Bank Holiday Closure

All libraries in Cavan will be closed on Saturday 31st January and Monday 2nd February. Services will resume as normal from 10am Tuesday 3rd February. You can access your library account and online library 24/7 with your library card number and PIN. Lá Fhéile Bríde shona daoibh!

Family Time at Your Library this December

Family Time at Your Library is the annual reading initiative held every December which aims to support a family-focused approach to reading and to promote reading as a fun, recreational activity for children. We’re celebrating throughout the month in all Cavan Libraries and invite all families to visit us for storytimes, crafts, competitions and more!
